Escalating Tensions Over Form 6 and Voter‑Roll Overhaul

New Delhi – The political standoff between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition INDIA coalition intensified on Tuesday, with the BJP accusing the Congress of weaponising a petition to the Election Commission. According to the BJP, the opposition’s demand to scrutinise the voter‑registration mechanism is a calculated strategy to rejuvenate Rahul Gandhi’s waning political clout.

BJP Challenges Congress’ Interpretation of Supreme Court Remarks

BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra argued that the Congress is misrepresenting the Supreme Court’s observations on Form 6, the application used by citizens to request inclusion in the electoral rolls. Patra clarified that the apex court has not declared the form unlawful; it merely ordered a probe into alleged tampering.

Opposition’s Continued Push Against the CEC

Members of the INDIA alliance staged a march to the Election Commission’s headquarters in New Delhi, seeking clarification from Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. They contend that procedural changes to Form 6 were introduced without adequate oversight and demand greater transparency.

BJP Refutes Allegations of Illegality

Patra maintained that the Supreme Court’s notices are procedural steps, not a verdict of misconduct. He pointed out that the Election Commission itself has affirmed that the statutory Form 6 remains unchanged and that the revision was conducted under decisions already sanctioned by the commission.

Congress’s Counter‑Argument

The opposition insists that the purported modifications to Form 6 were irregular and that the CEC acted unilaterally. Rahul Gandhi has framed the dispute as a litmus test of the commission’s neutrality, while the Congress calls for an independent audit of the voter‑roll update.

Underlying Political Calculus

Patra suggested that the protest is less about safeguarding electoral integrity and more about providing Rahul Gandhi a stage to re‑emerge in the national arena. He warned that targeting constitutional bodies could become a recurring tactic for the opposition.

With both sides entrenched in their narratives, the Form 6 controversy is poised to dominate political discourse as the next election approaches.
