Ranchi- Ranchi is stepping up its welfare efforts just in time for the festive season. The Jharkhand government has fast-tracked its popular Sona-Sobran Dhoti-Saree Scheme, aiming to deliver essential garments to nearly 6.87 million economically vulnerable households across the state for the first half of the 2026–27 financial year.
The rollout is already well underway. Initial distribution phases have successfully kicked off in four key districts: Chatra, Godda, Jamtara, and Latehar. Within the first two days alone, approximately 900 local residents received their entitled benefits, setting the stage for a broader statewide expansion.
Who Qualifies for the Scheme?
The welfare initiative is specifically tailored to support households enrolled under two critical food security frameworks:
- The National Food Security Act (NFSA)
- The Jharkhand State Food Security Scheme
Under the guidelines of the programme, every qualifying family is entitled to receive one saree and either a dhoti or a lungi at heavily subsidised rates. By stepping in ahead of Diwali, the state administration hopes to alleviate some of the financial burden low-income households typically face during major celebrations.
Streamlining Supply and Quality Control
To guarantee a smooth and efficient rollout, state authorities have partnered with Mafatlal Industries Limited. The firm has been entrusted with manufacturing and delivering the apparel consignments for both biannual cycles of the 2026–27 fiscal period, shipping directly to designated block distribution centers to prevent bottlenecks.
However, officials stress that speed will not compromise standards. Strict protocols have been put in place to safeguard garment quality:
- Block Development Officers (BDOs) are mandated to pull random samples immediately upon a consignment's arrival.
- Comprehensive quality inspections must be completed within a strict 48-hour window.
- Actual distribution to the public is strictly prohibited until the textile batches successfully pass these mandatory evaluations.
With operations already operational in select regions and rigorous checks safeguarding standards, the Jharkhand administration is racing against the clock to ensure millions of families can celebrate Diwali with dignity and newly acquired festive attire.
