Gangotri Temple Observes Winter Hiatus

Uttarkashi authorities have announced that the revered Gangotri Temple will be sealed for the winter months on 10 November at 12:05 PM. The chosen moment coincides with the auspicious Abhijit Muhurat and aligns with the traditional Annakoot and Govardhan Puja festivities.

Ceremonial Send‑Off

The temple board, chaired by secretary Suresh Semwal, confirmed the timetable after the ninth day of Sharadiya Navratri. As the final temple bells resonate, the ceremonial palanquin carrying the deity—Goddess Ganga—will be escorted out amidst a marching band from the Army and chants of “Jai Maa Ganga.”

Transit to Mukhba Village

Following the closure rites, the sacred palanquin will journey to Mukhba, the remote high‑altitude hamlet that serves as Ganga’s winter residence. The convoy is slated to reach Mukhba on 11 November, the day of Bhai Dooj, where a series of prayers and rituals will be performed.

Pilgrims are invited to gather at the temporary shrine in Mukhba, offering their respects and seeking blessings throughout the six‑month winter period. This relocation guarantees uninterrupted worship despite the main shrine’s inaccessibility due to heavy snowfall.

Seasonal Importance

The winter shutdown marks the conclusion of this year's Char Dham pilgrimage season. While the high‑altitude location forces the primary sanctum to close, moving the palanquin safeguards the spiritual continuity for devotees wishing to maintain their devotion to the holy river goddess.

For the next half‑year, Mukhba will become the focal point of worship, allowing believers to stay connected with Goddess Ganga until the temple reopens in spring.
