Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, an unidentified group hurled bricks at the Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham Hindu temple in Richmond Heights, Ohio. The projectiles shattered multiple windows and left visible damage inside the sanctuary while priests and devotees were present.
Law Enforcement and Federal Partners Probe the Incident
Local police are scrutinizing the temple’s security footage to reconstruct the attack and identify the culprits. The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) confirmed that the video has been turned over to investigators and that the case is also being examined by the FBI and civil‑rights authorities.
To date, no suspect has been publicly named and no arrests have been made.
Community Voices Demand a Prompt, Open Investigation
National Hindu groups, including the Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA), have urged officials to act quickly, hold perpetrators accountable, and publicly condemn the assault. CoHNA specifically called on Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas and other local leaders to denounce the act and reassure the Hindu community of its safety.
While some observers suspect a hate‑based motive, law‑enforcement officials have not confirmed bias as a factor.
Worshippers Unharmed, Property Damaged
Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported. The primary damage consists of broken windows and other property impairments, which temple staff continue to inventory.
HAF has pressed authorities to locate those responsible and issue a strong public statement against rhetoric that threatens Hindu or Indian‑American communities.
Historical Vandalism of Hindu Temples Cited
CoHNA referenced earlier vandalism incidents at Hindu temples in New York and California, noting that each case unfolded under different circumstances. Although these events raise concern, they remain separate investigations and do not alone prove a nationwide trend.
The Richmond Heights case remains active as investigators continue to analyze video evidence and pursue leads to determine whether religious bias played a role.
