Man detained in Himachal after alleged rape tied to a broken marriage promise

Law enforcement officers in Mandi have taken into custody a resident of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, accused of raping a woman who had placed her trust in his vow to marry her.

The accused, identified as Sameer, son of Dilshad, who lives in the Civil Lines area of Muzaffarnagar, was located in Thural, Kangra district, just as he was preparing to leave Himachal Pradesh.

How the complaint arose

According to the victim’s statement, Sameer promised to marry her, then escorted her to Mandi where she alleges he assaulted her. After the purported assault, he allegedly absconded with her motorcycle, mobile phone, roughly ₹70,000 in cash and jewellery, leaving her stranded in Chandigarh. Subsequent attempts to reach him were ignored.

Chronology of the investigation

The grievance was lodged on 29 August as a Zero FIR at the Civil Lines Police Station in Muzaffarnagar and later transferred to the Sadar Police Station in Mandi for a detailed probe.

Following the filing, the complainant uploaded a video from Mandi questioning why police had not yet apprehended the accused, noting that his phone remained active. Investigators examined the mobile‑tower logs, pinpointed the signal to Thural, and moved in to arrest him before he could cross the state border.

Official remarks

Mandi Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar confirmed that the matter is under active investigation and that Sameer will be produced before a court in accordance with legal procedures.

Authorities are now reviewing the full spectrum of accusations, including the alleged theft of cash and jewellery, to determine additional charges based on the evidence collected.
