Congress Releases Its Ticket for the Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections

The party has officially named three aspirants for the biennial poll to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Two seasoned members are set to defend their seats, and a fresh face has been introduced for the Amravati Teachers’ constituency.

Returning Incumbents and a First‑Time Challenger

Abhijit Wanjari will again contest the Nagpur Division Graduates’ seat, while Jayant Dinkar Asagaonkar seeks re‑election from the Pune Division Teachers’ constituency. Both are sitting MLCs whose current terms lapse in December 2026.

Joining them is Aditi Pohare, who will contest the Amravati Division Teachers’ seat for the first time, marking her debut in the council race.

Five Seats Up for Grabs

The upcoming election covers five constituencies: three Graduates’ seats – Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Pune and Nagpur – and two Teachers’ seats – Amravati and Pune. All sitting members’ terms conclude on 6 December 2026.

Key Timelines for the Election Process

  • Nomination filing closes: 6 October
  • Scrutiny of nominations: 7 October
  • Withdrawal deadline: 9 October
  • Polling date: 23 October
  • Result counting: 27 October

Coordination Within the MVA Alliance

The announcements arrive as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)—a coalition of Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar) and Shiv Sena (UBT)—continues internal deliberations on seat‑sharing for the council polls. While each partner is releasing its own list, the alliance has pledged to harmonise its strategy ahead of the October vote.

As the nomination deadline draws near, the contest for the five council seats is expected to tighten, setting the stage for a closely watched battle.
