Lucknow – After a detailed aerial and on‑ground assessment of water‑logged zones surrounding the capital, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a far‑reaching flood‑control initiative. The flagship element is a fresh embankment that will link Faizullaganj with Naimish, designed to tame the frequent overflow of the Gomti River.
Embankment as a Green Flood Barrier
The proposed structure will double as a verdant corridor, with a paved roadway running atop the raised levee. Teams have been instructed to carry out a meticulous top‑down survey of the Gomti’s banks and to prepare a full‑scale project dossier. Alongside the barrier, an integrated network of drainage channels and pumping stations will channel rain‑water that pools outside the protected zone, guaranteeing swift evacuation.
On‑Ground Relief Review
During a field visit to the flood‑hit locality of Bakshi Ka Talab, the chief minister interacted with residents, inspected a health camp and supervised the distribution of emergency kits. He ordered the relocation of families from high‑risk spots to temporary relief shelters arranged in schools and marriage halls.
Support for Displaced Families
Camp administrators are now mandated to serve hot meals twice a day, provide milk for children, and supply nutrient‑rich rations for pregnant women. Livestock owners will receive fodder, while sites lacking electricity will be equipped with solar lanterns and Petromax lamps.
Compensation Measures
Households that suffered deaths due to drowning or lightning will be granted an immediate cash assistance of ₹4 lakh. Families whose homes were completely destroyed and meet eligibility will be allotted dwellings under existing state housing schemes. Agricultural losses—including crops and livestock—will be evaluated so that qualifying farmers can claim appropriate compensation.
Relief Kits Containing 26 Essentials
Each impacted household receives a kit packed with 26 essential items such as rice, wheat flour, potatoes, pulses, cooking oil, salt, spices and waterproofing material. The kits are intended to sustain families until regular supplies are restored.
Security and Medical Provisions
The CM instructed police, Home Guards, PRD staff and local watchmen to patrol the camps and vacated homes, protecting property and deterring looting. Health stations will keep anti‑snake‑venom and anti‑rabies injections ready, while dedicated medical and veterinary camps are being rolled out across the hardest‑hit zones.
Why the Floods Hit This Year
Intense rainfall over the Gomti’s upstream catchment—covering Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur and even parts of Nepal—pushed river levels skyward, submerging low‑lying districts around Lucknow. The Faizullaganj‑Naimish embankment is now being positioned as a long‑term shield, offering flood mitigation together with improved connectivity via the road that will crown the levee.
