Agra: After a protracted hunt lasting nearly eleven months, Uttar Pradesh police have taken a woman into custody in connection with a violent episode reported from Barhan, Agra. Investigators allege she assaulted her brother‑in‑law when he purportedly turned down a marriage proposal for her sister.
The alleged attack occurred on the night of 20 October 2025, shortly after Diwali festivities. The victim, employed as a chemical assistant engineer at a cement plant in Haldwani, had returned home for the holiday celebrations.
Victim Attacked Inside a Room
According to the complaint, the engineer was sleeping outside the house after the Diwali puja when his sister‑in‑law summoned him to a bedroom around 2 a.m. Police say she then assaulted him with a blade, inflicting severe injuries.
The victim’s screams awakened other family members, who rushed to his aid. Law enforcement arrived, escorted him to SN Medical College for emergency care, and later transferred him to AIIMS Delhi due to the seriousness of his wounds.
Accused Remained Elusive
Following the assault, the woman’s husband allegedly escorted her back to her parental home in Etah. She subsequently vanished from the village and evaded police attempts to locate her.
After persistent tracing efforts, investigators finally apprehended her at a relative’s residence.
Attempt‑to‑Murder Charge Added
DCP West Zone Aditya Singh stated that the medical report confirmed the injuries were grave and potentially fatal. Consequently, the police have upgraded the case to include an attempt‑to‑murder charge.
