Case overview
In October 2024, the lifeless body of a six‑year‑old girl was found inside a deserted warehouse in the Daladabari area of Jaigaon, Alipurduar. Investigators quickly zeroed in on the child’s neighbours, naming them as the chief suspects in a savage rape and killing.
Investigation highlights
The police reconstruction revealed a premeditated kidnapping: the prime accused allegedly lured the girl away with false promises. Critical evidence emerged from surveillance footage, forensic reports, and DNA matches, leading to the arrest of Bablu Mian first, followed by Zaidul Islam, Manir Hussain and Majibul Sheikh.
During the probe, statements from twenty‑two witnesses were recorded, bolstering the material evidence and confirming the involvement of all four men.
Judgment and penalties
The fast‑track bench spent roughly eighteen months reviewing the case. Prosecutor Debaranjan Bandyopadhyay had urged the magistrates to impose the harshest punishments permissible under law.
Finding the evidence against the quartet overwhelming, the court sentenced Bablu Mian to death. The three co‑accused—Zaidul Islam, Manir Hussain and Majibul Sheikh—were each handed life imprisonment. The prosecution’s claim that the victim’s body had been incinerated was rejected, as it could not be proved beyond reasonable doubt.
"We prayed for the severest punishment for the monster who took our daughter away," the victim’s mother said, tearfully.
Beyond custodial sentences, the state government was directed to pay ₹6 lakh as compensation to the grieving family.
While the verdict closes the fast‑track trial, the convicted men retain the right to appeal the judgment before higher courts.
