New Delhi – The capital is set to undergo a massive digital overhaul of its road‑control infrastructure. The Union government has approved a ₹1,789.52 crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) that will be implemented by the Delhi Police, interlinking every existing signal with a real‑time data hub.
Smart Signals That Adapt to Real‑World Flow
At the core of the ITMS are intelligent traffic lights. By continuously counting vehicles, each signal can extend or shorten its green interval to mirror actual demand. High‑traffic corridors enjoy longer greens, whereas less‑busy routes receive briefer phases, helping to balance flow on the city’s main arteries.
Instant Green Corridors for Emergency Vehicles
When an ambulance, fire‑engine or police car approaches, the system instantly detects the alert and synchronises the lights along its route. This creates a seamless “green corridor” that escorts first‑responders through traffic without any manual intervention.
Live Visibility of Congestion and Accidents
ITMS streams a steady flow of data to traffic controllers, detailing vehicle speeds, congestion hotspots and crash locations. Equipped with this insight, officials can reroute traffic, dispatch assistance or tweak signal timings on the fly, shifting from reactive to proactive traffic stewardship.
AI‑Enabled Cameras Enforce Road Rules
AI‑powered cameras will patrol the streets, automatically flagging violations such as red‑light jumps, stop‑line breaches, overspeeding, wrong‑way driving, riding without helmets, neglecting seat‑belts, illegal parking and mobile‑phone use while driving.
A Data‑Centric Future for Delhi’s Streets
By fusing live traffic feeds, adaptive signalling and AI surveillance, the ₹1,789.52 crore initiative lifts Delhi beyond a static, signal‑only model. The new platform promises quicker commutes, safer roads and uninterrupted routes for emergency services, heralding a truly intelligent urban traffic ecosystem.
