Deadly Bathing Incident at Sur Ghat

During the Jitiya festivities, two eighteen‑year‑old sisters, Kajal Kumari and Pinky Kumari of Zakheera, slipped into the swift, deeper stretch of the Yamuna River at Sur Ghat, close to the Wazirabad bridge, and were unable to resurface.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

Bystanders raised alarms as the girls disappeared beneath the water. Local rescue divers and volunteers immediately launched a search, locating the bodies downstream and bringing them ashore, though the victims had already succumbed to the current.

Police Response and Autopsy

Officers from Timarpur police station arrived swiftly, secured the bodies and dispatched them for post‑mortem analysis.

“The youngsters entered a hazardous part of the river during the ritual bath and tragically drowned,” explained North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Niharika Bhatt.

An official inquiry has been launched to determine the exact chain of events that led to the drownings.

Families Demand Better Ghat Safety

In the aftermath, the relatives of Kajal and Pinky have publicly criticized the lack of safety infrastructure at the ghat, citing missing barriers, insufficient warning signs, and an absence of on‑site security to keep people away from the dangerous zone.

Authorities have promised a thorough review of current safety provisions and to act on the concerns raised by the grieving families.
