Dehradun: Uttarakhand launched its 2026 Wildlife Week with an array of activities intended to deepen conservation initiatives and spotlight the state’s abundant natural legacy. The celebration kicked off on 1 October at the Forest Research Institute (FRI) campus in Dehradun and will continue through 8 October.
Bridging Communities and the Wild
The programme seeks to tighten the bond between local residents and the region’s fauna, urging people to become active custodians of forests, biodiversity and key habitats. Throughout the week, workshops, school‑focused outreach, and guided treks will illustrate the ecological worth of Uttarakhand’s varied terrains.
Uttarakhand’s Ecological Tapestry
From soaring Himalayan summits to the low‑lying Terai plains, Uttarakhand harbours a striking mosaic of ecosystems. Its woodlands are home to flagship species such as tigers, elephants, leopards, bears and numerous deer, alongside an impressive avian assemblage. Officials underline that safeguarding individual animals is inseparable from protecting the corridors and seasonal routes that facilitate their movements.
Tackling Human‑Wildlife Conflict
A core focus of this year’s Wildlife Week is reducing confrontations between people and wildlife. Communities bordering forests often face incidents that endanger livestock, crops and human safety. The campaign therefore concentrates on three pillars:
- Awareness: Community meetings and radio programmes educate villagers about animal behaviour and safety protocols.
- Monitoring: Strengthened patrols and the deployment of camera traps help track wildlife near settlements.
- Participation: Local volunteers are being trained as wildlife liaisons to report sightings and support rapid‑response teams.
Preserving Corridors and Guiding Development
Authorities reiterate that any new infrastructure or tourism venture must respect existing wildlife corridors. Environmental impact assessments are now compulsory for roads, hydro‑electric projects and mining proposals to ensure critical pathways remain undisturbed.
Looking Forward
As the week draws to a close on 8 October, officials hope the momentum generated will evolve into lasting community stewardship. By marrying scientific insight with grassroots participation, Uttarakhand aspires to foster a harmonious coexistence between its people and the extraordinary fauna that inhabit the region.
