Surat influencer taken into custody for a Gandhi‑inspired Instagram reel
Police from Surat’s Cyber Crime Branch seized a 47‑year‑old Instagram personality from the Adajan district after a brief clip she posted on October 1 raised serious objections. The reel, shared just days before Gandhi Jayanti, displayed Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait as it appears on the ₹500 note and was paired with gestures and captions that authorities deemed disrespectful.
Identified as Simran Patel, the woman calls herself a homemaker but boasts a following of almost one million users. According to police, a formal complaint triggered a digital forensics sweep that pinpointed the offending material to her account, leading to her arrest.
Charges filed under the Information Technology Act
Investigators lodged a case under Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, which penalises the creation or transmission of obscene content in electronic form. After verifying the post’s nature, the cyber‑crime team booked Patel and placed her behind bars.
The filing illustrates how India’s cyber‑statutes are increasingly being invoked to police content perceived as insulting to national symbols.
Officials caution against lax social‑media behaviour
The branch issued a wide‑ranging advisory urging netizens to fact‑check before sharing and to refrain from using religious, cultural or historic icons in ways that could attract legal scrutiny. Users are also encouraged to report dubious material to the relevant authorities rather than amplifying it.
The probe remains ongoing as investigators continue to examine the creation, distribution and impact of the reel.
