New Delhi – Police have taken into custody three individuals suspected of involvement in a gang‑rape case involving a 17‑year‑old girl in the Astha Kunj vicinity of the Kalkaji Temple. One of the accused, 34‑year‑old Asif from Tughlakabad, was apprehended after a violent police encounter and is currently receiving treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre for a gunshot wound.
How the incident unfolded
The victim and a younger male friend visited Kalkaji Temple for prayers and later entered Astha Kunj Park through Gate No. 7. According to investigators, three men approached the pair, claimed to be police officers and threatened them. The assailants allegedly separated the girl from her friend and lured her to a secluded spot.
There, Asif is reported to have brandished a weapon, threatened the girl and proceeded to sexually assault her. The other two men are also accused of taking part in the assault and of intimidating the victim and her companion before fleeing the scene.
Police response
Following a tip‑off, officers from Amar Colony Police Station rushed to Astha Kunj. The girl was transported to AIIMS for a medical examination, while crime‑scene investigators collected forensic evidence.
Subsequent intelligence placed Asif near the DM Office Road in Amar Colony. A police unit surrounded the area and attempted to detain him. Asif allegedly opened fire, discharging three rounds; one bullet struck the bullet‑proof vest of Head Constable Rajesh. In self‑defence, the constable returned fire, hitting Asif’s leg. He was then taken to AIIMS for emergency care. The remaining two suspects have also been arrested.
Legal proceedings
An FIR has been lodged and a comprehensive investigation is underway. Authorities have confirmed the victim’s age as 16‑17 years and have completed her medical examination. Further interrogation of the accused is in progress to reconstruct the full chain of events.
